Karmenu Vella is the new Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. Before joining the European Commission, Mr Vella was Minister for Tourism and Aviation. He earned a master's degree in tourism management in 2000. From 2010 to 2013 he worked as Chairman for the Orange Travel Group and from 2008 to 2013 as group coordinator for the Labour Party Parliamentary Group. Mr Vella holds a bachelor's degree in architecture and civil engineering and was minister for public works from 1981 to 1983. Mr Vella becomes a member of the Maltese Parliament in 1976.
